TransMetro Center Photoshoot

A few weeks ago, I was asked to take some photos of the TransMetro Center for an upcoming RFP. I got lucky that it was a nice, bright late morning/early afternoon. I wouldn't say that these photo are great or works of art or design, but photography has come to take a larger role in what I do at DMC. Curious, two of the three firms I have worked at since college has utilized me as a photographer in some capacity or another. although my training has really been that of a designer, despite all my years prior in the darkroom of commercial printers before college as a semi-professional.

Bunjie Hucksters & Holiday Shopping

From The Design Tracts

Sometimes the best design comes on the fly. The Bunjie Huckster packaging was once such program that I put together in a matter of hours, die-lines and all.I don't know what it is, but I can never complete my holiday shopping without waiting to the last moment. I am too picky. No gift is good enough and the prices always seem to high.
Just like with design and certainly with some projects over others.

Tight deadlines are at most times, this designer's best friend. I don't have time to shop, I must pick a direction, develop it and get it off my desk and to the client.

Gordie Boucher // Go Green // Personalized URL

Not all of my projects are sexy. Designing PURLS are one of them as you have to design them very simply. Because of the software we use, I am limited to tabling everything. Using CSS for styling and positioning will not work, so I manage the best I can with circa 1990's webdesign with straight html and tables and gifs for interactivity. FYI, I did not choose the software we use to deploy these sites and I was not consulted.

This was released a week or two ago. You can check it out here.

I Get Press!

From The Design Tracts

Two days ago I received an email request from a reporter at this daily, oddly named, The Daily Reporter wanting to do a story on me and the pictures of the sidewalk dateplates/imprints that I had taken a few months ago. I said sure and that I'd be happy too. I was interviewed yesterday morning and the photoshoot was yesterday afternoon.

You need to be a registered user to read the story. My "1971" is published as well. I hope they send me the print version too.

Good times and thanks much to Dustin, Sean, and the editor Jim for taking an interest in my work.

Successful failures, a logo sketch pad

MK|DIRECT Logo Sketch Pad

I can't stress the importance of sketching out your ideas in multiple ways when you begin an identity/logo assignment. Of course, when designing you are looking for just the right answer to whatever particular problem you are trying to solve. Unfortunately, to nail the right one, you have to find out what doesn't work. Designers are successful failures.

My methodology is pretty simple. After I've done some simple research, I open up a 50 inch or 100 inch square Illustrator document. My goal is to fill this sheet up with different ideas while not trying to get all caught up with minutiae. I want basic but solid ideas to work from. Once I get a healthy number of finalists I proceed in a level two design where I ascribe a look to the logo by treating the type or elevating the bug.
